Healthy Smiles as Children Grow

Learn what to expect at each stage of your child’s dental development and how preventive care can support a lifetime of healthy smiles.

First Dental Visit

A child’s first dental visit should generally take place within six months after the first tooth appears, and no later than the first birthday. During this visit, the dentist will review your child’s medical and dental history, examine growth and development, check for early signs of cavities or other concerns, and discuss brushing, fluoride, diet, teething, habits, and injury prevention.

The goal is to help your child become comfortable with dental care while giving parents practical guidance for healthy development.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are thin protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth, where food and plaque can collect in deep grooves. These areas can be difficult for toothbrush bristles to reach.

Sealants create a barrier that helps protect vulnerable tooth surfaces from decay. The process is quick and comfortable, and sealants can last for several years with normal chewing.

Routine Dental Visits

Regular dental visits help monitor your child’s oral health, growth and development. During checkups, the dentist looks for tooth decay, evaluates how the teeth and jaws are developing, and recommends preventive care when needed.

The ideal visit schedule depends on your child’s individual needs, including oral hygiene, diet, cavity history and other risk factors.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel and can make teeth more resistant to decay. Your child’s dentist may recommend a professional fluoride treatment based on age, cavity risk, oral hygiene habits, diet and other factors.

Professional fluoride treatments are typically quick and comfortable. Your dentist can also review your child’s overall fluoride exposure from toothpaste, drinking water and other sources.

Mouth Protectors

Sports and recreational activities can put children at risk for dental injuries. A properly fitted mouth protector can help cushion impacts and reduce the risk of broken teeth and injuries to the lips, face and jaw.

Mouthguards may be helpful not only for contact sports, but also for activities such as soccer, gymnastics, bicycling, skating and skateboarding.

Pediatric Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies can happen suddenly, especially with active children. Toothaches, broken teeth, knocked-out teeth, mouth injuries and other urgent concerns should be evaluated promptly.

If your child experiences a dental injury or significant pain, contact our office as soon as possible so we can help determine the appropriate next step and arrange care when needed.
