Understanding the Parts of Your Braces

Braces are made up of several components that work together to gradually move the teeth into better alignment. Knowing the names and functions of these parts can make orthodontic treatment easier to understand.

HOW BRACES WORK

How the Parts of Braces Work Together

Braces use brackets, wires, and other components to apply gentle, controlled pressure that gradually moves the teeth into better positions.

Brackets Hold the Wire

Brackets are attached to the teeth and serve as small handles that help guide tooth movement.

The Archwire Guides Movement

The archwire connects the brackets and provides the gentle forces that help move the teeth over time.

Adjustments Keep Treatment Progressing

During orthodontic visits, the wire and other components may be adjusted or changed to continue guiding the teeth toward their planned positions.

MAIN COMPONENTS

The Main Parts of Braces

Each part of your braces has a specific role in guiding the teeth and supporting orthodontic treatment.

Brackets

Brackets are attached to the teeth and act as small anchors that help guide tooth movement.

Archwire

The archwire runs through the brackets and applies gentle pressure to help move the teeth into their planned positions.

Bands

Orthodontic bands are metal rings that fit around certain teeth and may be used to support appliances or provide additional anchorage.

Elastic Ties

Small elastic ties hold the archwire in place within the brackets. They may be clear or available in different colors.

Hooks

Hooks are small attachments on brackets or wires that may be used to connect orthodontic elastics.

Power Chain

A power chain is a connected series of elastic rings used to help close spaces or move groups of teeth together.

ADDITIONAL COMPONENTS

Other Parts You May See During Treatment

Depending on your treatment plan, your orthodontist may use additional components to help guide tooth movement, correct the bite, or create space.

Orthodontic Elastics

Small rubber bands may be worn between the upper and lower teeth to help improve the bite and guide the jaws and teeth into a better relationship.

Coil Springs

Coil springs may be placed on the archwire to help create or maintain space between teeth during treatment.

Palatal Expander

A palatal expander may be used in growing patients to gradually widen the upper jaw and create additional space when appropriate.

Separators

Small elastic separators may be placed between certain teeth before orthodontic bands are fitted.

IF SOMETHING BREAKS

What to Do if Part of Your Braces Breaks

Most orthodontic problems can be managed temporarily until you can be seen, but broken or loose components should be reported to your orthodontic team.

Loose Bracket

If a bracket becomes loose but is still attached to the wire, avoid disturbing it and use orthodontic wax if it is causing irritation.

Poking Wire

If a wire is irritating your cheek or gums, orthodontic wax may help provide temporary relief until the wire can be adjusted.

Loose Band or Appliance

If a band, expander, or other appliance feels loose, stop using it as directed and contact the office for guidance.

Broken or Missing Component

If part of your braces breaks or comes off, save the piece if possible and contact our office so we can determine whether a repair visit is needed.

BRACES CARE

How to Care for Your Braces

Good daily habits can help protect your braces, keep your teeth and gums healthy, and reduce the risk of treatment delays.

Brush Carefully

Brush around the brackets, wires, and gumline after meals to help remove food and plaque.

Floss Every Day

Use floss threaders, orthodontic flossers, or other recommended tools to clean between the teeth and under the archwire.

Avoid Hard and Sticky Foods

Hard, sticky, and chewy foods can loosen brackets, bend wires, or damage other orthodontic components.

Keep Your Orthodontic Appointments

Regular visits allow your orthodontist to monitor progress, make adjustments, and address problems before they interfere with treatment.
